The cost of an air con regas depends mainly on which refrigerant gas your car uses, with the newer R1234YF gas usually costing more to regas than the older R134A, and on the garage you choose.
Product Name | Min | Max | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
R134A (Old refrigerant gas) | £42 | £100 | £58 |
R1234YF (New refrigerant gas) | £59 | £151.40 | £92.40 |
Data taken from bookings made at live garages on BookMyGarage.com in the last 12 months. Last updated October 6th 2026.
Most cars made before 2014 use R134A gas, while every car with air con manufactured since 1st January 2017 uses the newer R1234YF gas. Cars built between 2014 and 2016 could use either, as manufacturers switched over gradually.
The two gases use different filling ports, so a garage can’t fill your air con with the wrong one. A small number of electric cars use a third gas, R744.
During an air con re-gas, a technician removes the old refrigerant gas in your air con system and replaces it with fresh gas. This keeps your cabin cool and comfortable during hot weather.
The old gas and oil are removed first, then the system is refilled with the correct amount of new refrigerant and lubricant for your car. A vacuum test is also carried out to check for any cracks or damage in your air conditioning system that could let the gas leak out.
A regas should take no longer than an hour.
If your system has a leak, the new gas will simply escape again, so the leak needs to be repaired before a regas will make a lasting difference.
As a general guide, it’s worth having your air con regassed every two years or so. Many drivers wait until it stops blowing cold, but air con that isn’t working properly also makes it harder to demist your windows in winter and can make the engine work harder, using more fuel in the process.
If you’ve noticed any of the following symptoms, it’s time to book an air con regas:
Warm air coming from the vents
Air coming from the vents is no different when AC is off
The windows take longer to demist
The vents smell musty
If you don’t have time to take your car to a physical garage, why not book a mobile air con regas for further convenience instead?
