How Much Does a Car Air Con Repair Cost?

The cost of an air con repair depends on what’s gone wrong. A small leak is usually far cheaper to fix than a failed compressor. Your car’s make and model and the parts it needs also affect the price.

Repair

Typical UK cost (parts and labour)

Leak or small component repair

£100 to £300

Air con condenser replacement

£200 to £600 (up to around £900 on some larger and prestige models)

Air con compressor replacement

£250 to £800

Typical UK costs based on published industry estimates as of 5th October 2026. Prices are representative figures only as costs vary depending on your make and model, the parts used and your chosen garage. Enter your reg and postcode to compare local garages for your exact car.

If your system simply needs topping up rather than repairing, a regas costs much less.

What Can Go Wrong With Car Air Con?

Most air con repairs come down to a leak or a faulty part in your car’s air conditioning system.

  • A refrigerant leak. If gas is escaping, your air con will gradually stop blowing cold, however many times it’s topped up.

  • A faulty compressor. Without a working compressor, your air con system can only blow air at outside temperatures.

  • A damaged condenser. Damage to the front end of your car can also affect the condenser, which limits air con performance.

How Do Garages Check for an Air Con Leak?

A vacuum test checks your air con system for cracks or damage that could let the gas leak out. If your system has no refrigerant left in it at all, some garages will carry out a pressure test with an inert gas first, so they can check for leaks safely.

If a leak is found, it needs repairing before the system is regassed, otherwise the new gas will simply escape again.

Warning Signs to Look For

If you notice the following at regular intervals, you may need to book an inspection of your car's air con system:

  • Weak air flow

  • The system struggles to blow cold air

  • The system only blows warm air

  • The system doesn't switch on

  • The system produces a strange noise or bad smell

The biggest warning sign of all that your car is in need of an air con repair is that you have to keep re-gassing your air con system.

Why Should I Book an Air Conditioning Repair for My Car?

Your car's air con system doesn't just keep you cool in the summer.

A faulty air con system can affect your car's performance and put additional strain on the engine, meaning you'll use more fuel but won't feel the cooling benefits of the A/C.

Repairing a faulty air conditioning system means you can enjoy improved fuel economy and stay focused as you drive.

Ignoring the issue could increase the repair costs and possibly even reduce the resale value of your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

We wouldn’t recommend fixing your air con system yourself.

Re-gassing the system requires a specialist machine, and it takes an experienced technician to properly diagnose the issue with a faulty air con unit.

The refrigerant gas itself is also harmful to the environment and needs to be disposed of safely, which can’t be done at home.

For these reasons, you should not attempt to fix your car’s air conditioning at home - you should choose a qualified repair shop near you instead.
An air conditioning repair is a more targeted car repair.

Unlike an air conditioning regas, repairing your car’s air con system is not preventative maintenance and only needs to be done when there is a specific problem.

An air con repair usually solves a problem to do with a leak, broken compressor, condenser or other air conditioning part.
If your car's air con is struggling, a technician can provide a diagnosis and fix by first regassing the system and waiting a couple of weeks to see how much refrigerant gas is lost (if there's not an immediately obvious problem).

If the problem persists, the technician will repeat the process to determine which part of the system is causing problems.
A car air con repair can take anywhere between 1 and 8 hours, depending on the work required and the complexity of the repair.

Diagnosing the right air con repair can take much longer than the actual repair.
We recognise the very best performing garages in your area with a Silver, Gold or Top Tier badge. These badges help you spot garages that deliver customer service that goes above and beyond for drivers, offering great value, high standards and satisfaction/high ratings.
We never ask for payment details upfront.

Once you’ve chosen your garage, you deal with them directly from start to finish, paying only after the work is complete – giving you full peace of mind.

Some mobile technicians may request some commitment or payment upfront to cover the costs of them coming out to you.

The best option for you will depend on your priorities. That’s why we show prices, ratings, availability, distance and everything else you need to find the right value for you, not just the lowest price.
We recommend the garages we deem most relevant for you based on your selected product, postcode and the reviews of garages in your area, prioritising BMG Verified and Silver, Gold and Top Tier garages for added peace of mind.

You can change your filters anytime if one factor is more important to you than others – full transparency, full control.
Only if your system is simply low on gas. A regas is usually the first thing to try when your air con isn’t blowing as cold as it should, but if there’s a leak, the new gas will escape again and the leak will need repairing first.
