How Much Does an ECU Repair Cost?

An ECU repair typically costs between £150 and £400, while a replacement ECU, including coding it to your car, usually costs £500 to £1,500 or more.

The price depends on whether your existing unit can be repaired or needs replacing, your make and model (prestige makes can sometimes cost more), whether the ECU needs coding and the labour to remove and refit it.

The garage will usually need to find the cause of the fault first, as the same symptoms are often caused by a faulty sensor or another part. If your engine management light is on, you can book a diagnostic check to get started.

What Does an ECU Do?

The engine control unit (ECU) is a small computer that manages your engine. It uses sensors to control things like fuel injection, ignition timing and emissions, keeping your car running smoothly.

ECU remapping, which changes your engine's performance settings, is a different job from an ECU repair.

Can an ECU Be Repaired, or Does It Need Replacing?

A damaged ECU can often be repaired, depending on how much damage there is.

Some repairs mean removing the ECU and sending it to a specialist. Depending on the fault and whether parts are available, an ECU repair can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of days.

If your ECU needs replacing, the new unit (even a used one) has to be programmed to your car, including its immobiliser, before it will work properly.

Your chosen garage will be able to advise on the best course of action once they have inspected your vehicle.

What Causes an ECU to Fail?

ECUs can fail for several reasons, including:

  • Water getting in, or corrosion

  • Voltage spikes, for example from jump-starting or a failing alternator

  • Damaged wiring or short circuits

  • Software problems

Warning Signs of a Faulty ECU

You might have a problem with your ECU if you notice any of the following:

  • The engine management light comes on

  • The engine stalls or misfires

  • Worse fuel economy than usual

  • Difficulty starting the car

  • Rough running or poor performance

These symptoms can also be caused by a faulty sensor or another part, so the garage will check those first.

Frequently asked questions

We currently do not display instant prices for ECU repairs on our platform. You can compare labour rates from local garages instead, and your chosen garage will confirm the cost once they've diagnosed the fault.
A labour rate is how much a garage charges for an hour of their time. This takes into account things like their level of expertise, the use of specialist equipment and general staffing costs.
The ECU is the heartbeat of your car, so any issue with it can have serious consequences if not taken care of promptly. As it manages crucial processes like fuel injection, ignition timing and emissions control, a faulty ECU can make your car incredibly difficult to drive or bring your life to a sudden halt. As a result, we recommend booking a repair as soon as you notice a problem.
It can be hard to tell whether your ECU is directly to blame for your problem. If your car is struggling to start, you may instead need an alternator repair, starter motor repair, replacement spark plugs or battery replacement.
And, as the check engine light can come on for many reasons, there is no obvious way to tell whether an ECU repair will get you moving smoothly again.

If you're unsure what the cause of your problem is, we recommend booking a diagnostic check at your perfect local garage. This will help the technician identify what part is to blame based on the error codes your vehicle is displaying.
You can use the Sort By button in the top right-hand corner to sort local garages by Price, Distance, Availability, Reviews or even Name to find the perfect option for your car's ECU repair. If you ever get overwhelmed by choice, you can revert to Relevance to see our recommended options, based on a combination of these factors.

If you also need a same- or next-day appointment, a mobile appointment or additional repairs, you can use the filter options on the left-hand sidebar to only see the search results that work for you.
It can. If a fault with your ECU causes the engine management light to come on, your car could fail its MOT.
Garages marked as BMG-Verified have been assessed by our team for customer service standards, ratings and reliability.
