A Class 7 MOT is the yearly roadworthiness test for goods vehicles with a design gross weight (DGW) over 3,000kg and up to 3,500kg, which covers most large vans and some light trucks.
Weight decides the class, rather than the model, so a lighter version of the same van may take a Class 4 test instead.
Since 1 June 2026, heavier electric vans have joined the list, too. Zero-emission goods vehicles between 3,501kg and 4,250kg DGW count as Class 7 under a DVSA MOT special notice, but hybrids and range-extender vans which use diesel, petrol or LPG internal combustion engines aren’t included.
If you want to check your vehicle's MOT class, your V5C logbook lists the vehicle’s maximum permissible mass, and the same figure appears on the manufacturer’s plate, usually on a door pillar or under the bonnet. Anything from 3,001kg to 3,500kg needs a Class 7 test.
Your vehicle needs its first test by the third anniversary of its registration and then one every year after that, just like a car.
A Class 7 MOT costs a maximum of £58.60, for petrol, diesel and hybrid goods vehicles (over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg design gross weight).
The same applies to zero-emission goods vehicles (between 3,501kg and 4,250kg design gross weight).
A van that’s off the road can put your plans on hold, so it pays to think ahead. You can take the test up to a month (minus a day) before your certificate runs out and keep the same renewal date.
Finding a Class 7 slot shouldn’t mean ringing round a list of garages. Browse local test centres near you by price, reviews and availability, so you can pick a time that works around your week. Compare BMG-Verified garages today and pay nothing until the test is done.
