Two scratches that look similar at a glance can end costing very different amounts. The things repairers take into account are:
Depth. A scratch that only marks the clear top layer can often be polished out, while one that reaches primer or bare metal needs filling, painting and blending.
Size and number of panels. A long key scratch running across two doors and a wing is a bigger job than a small mark on one panel, because each panel needs preparing and blending.
Where the damage is. Plastic bumpers, metal doors and panels near edges or trim each need slightly different techniques.
Your paint. Metallic, pearlescent and some solid colours take more work to match perfectly.
Mobile or workshop. Many scratch repairs can be done at your home or workplace by a mobile repairer, while larger jobs may need a workshop.
If the scratch comes with a dent, you may need a dent repair as well, and scuffed plastic bumpers are usually priced as bumper scuff repairs.
Many SMART (Small to Medium Area Repair Technology) scratch repairs can be finished in as little as three hours, and mobile repairers can often do the work at your home or workplace.
Larger or deeper scratches, or damage across several panels, can take longer, and your repairer will let you know a rough time estimate when they confirm your booking.
Car paint is built up in layers: a clear protective coat on top, the colour coat underneath, then primer and finally the metal or plastic panel. How far down a scratch goes decides how it needs fixing, and a quick way to judge it is the fingernail test. Run a fingernail gently across the scratch and see what happens.
What you notice | What it probably means |
Your nail glides over it | A light scratch in the clear coat, often fixed with polishing |
Your nail catches slightly | The scratch has gone into the colour coat and will need touching in or painting |
You can see grey, white or bare metal | The scratch has reached primer or metal and needs a proper repair soon |
A scratch down to bare metal is the one not to ignore. Once moisture gets in, rust can start forming under the surrounding paint and spread, which turns a small repair into a bigger job. The same applies if the paint around the scratch is starting to flake or bubble.
Fixing a scratch is usually worth it, because a tidy car is worth more when you sell it and scratches that reach the metal can lead to rust.
If your car is leased, you may also be charged for damage when you hand it back.
For very light scratches in the clear coat, a good polishing compound can make a real difference, and it costs very little to try.
Touch-up pens and DIY kits are a reasonable short-term fix for tiny chips, but on anything larger they rarely match the colour or finish properly, and a patchy DIY job can end up costing more to put right.
Option | Best for | Things to know |
DIY polish or kit | Very light clear-coat scratches, tiny chips | Cheap, but hard to get a smooth, colour-matched finish on deeper damage |
SMART repair | Most scratches and scuffs on one or two panels | Repairs just the damaged area; often done in a few hours, sometimes on your driveway |
Bodyshop | Large areas of damage, multiple panels, structural damage | Most thorough, but usually the most expensive and slowest option |
For minor damage like scratches, scuffs and small dents, paying for the repair yourself is often the cheaper option. Your policy excess (the compulsory amount plus any voluntary excess you've chosen) can be close to, or even more than, the cost of the repair.
A claim can also reduce your no-claims discount unless you've protected it, and your premium may still go up at renewal even if you have.
Claiming may be the better route for larger accident or collision damage that costs well over your excess, or if another driver was at fault, as their insurer may be liable for the repair.
When you book and pay for a repair through a repairer on our comparison site, there's no claim on your policy, and you choose the repairer rather than being sent to your insurer's approved network. Whatever you decide, you should still tell your insurer about any accident, even if you don't plan to claim.
