If your diesel has lost power or is showing a DPF light, a blocked diesel particulate filter is the likely reason, and the sooner you fix it, the cheaper it is. A professional DPF clean booked through BookMyGarage costs £141 on average, which is a fraction of the price of a new filter.

Your DPF traps the soot your engine produces, then burns it off in a process called regeneration. When regeneration can't keep up, the filter blocks.

What Are the Symptoms of a Blocked DPF?

The most common blocked DPF symptoms are a DPF warning light, a loss of power, higher fuel consumption and regenerations that keep failing:

  • A DPF warning light. This is the clearest sign. On some cars, a DPF system or pressure sensor fault also turns on the engine management light.

  • Loss of power or limp mode. The car feels sluggish, fails to accelerate or won't rev past a certain point, as it cuts power to protect itself.

  • Higher fuel consumption. The engine works harder and runs extra regenerations.

  • Failed regenerations. Fans running after you've parked, a higher idle or stop-start not working can all mean a regeneration hasn't finished.

  • A rising oil level. If the level rises between services or the oil smells of diesel, interrupted regenerations may be leaving fuel in the sump, so get it checked rather than topping up.

  • Smoke or a strong diesel smell. A working DPF should stop visible smoke.

What Causes a DPF to Block?

Short, low-speed journeys are the main cause, because the exhaust never gets hot enough to burn the soot away. Other causes include:

  • Regenerations being cut short. This usually happens when you switch off at the end of a short trip.

  • The wrong engine oil. Most modern diesels need a low-SAPS (low-ash) oil, as other oils leave more ash than regeneration can burn off.

  • Faults that create extra soot. A sticking EGR valve or faulty fuel injectors send more soot to the filter.

  • A faulty pressure sensor. This can stop regeneration from starting.

  • A low fuel or additive tank. Some cars won't start an active regeneration below about a quarter of a tank, and cars that use a DPF additive need it keeping topped up.

Overdue servicing makes a blockage more likely too. A clogged air filter or worn injectors add extra soot, while oil that hasn’t been replaced in a while breaks down and protects the engine less well.

Can You Drive with a Blocked DPF?

Yes, for a short time, and a steady drive that completes a regeneration often fixes a partly blocked filter.

If the car is in limp mode, you should keep journeys short and gentle and only drive where absolutely necessary until you can get the car into a local garage to avoid causing more damage.

If your DPF warning light is flashing or red, your car may not drive safely, so your best bet is to call your breakdown provider.

Will a Blocked DPF Damage My Engine?

Yes, because a blockage creates back pressure in the exhaust, which strains the engine and turbo and can send the car into limp mode. A neglected filter can also overheat, crack or melt, leaving you paying for a new filter rather than a clean.

Unblocking a DPF promptly will help you avoid more serious consequences, as the longer you leave it, the worse it’s likely to become.

Will a Blocked DPF Fail an MOT?

A blocked DPF will make your car fail its MOT if it turns on the engine management light or makes the exhaust smoke during the emissions test, and a missing or tampered DPF is always a failure.

As per the MOT inspection manual, these are all major faults on a diesel:

  • A DPF that's missing, obviously modified or obviously defective.

  • A DPF that's been cut open and rewelded without a valid reason, such as cleaning, so keep the paperwork if yours has been.

  • Visible smoke of any colour from a DPF-equipped exhaust.

  • The engine management light on or not working, on diesels first used from 1st July 2008.

How to Fix a Blocked DPF

Most blocked DPFs can be cleared without a new filter. Work through these fixes in order, starting with the cheapest.

Complete a Regeneration Drive

If the light has just come on, a steady drive on a faster road is usually enough, though the right speed and distance vary by manufacturer. For example, Volkswagen advises van drivers to drive at 31 to 75mph within the speed limit and to contact a repairer if the light is still on after about 30 minutes.

Check your handbook for specific advice for your vehicle.

Forced Regeneration or a Professional DPF Clean

If a drive doesn't work, a garage can run a forced regeneration to burn off the soot.

Where the filter is too blocked for that, professional DPF cleaning removes the built-up soot and ash.

Your chosen garage will advise which your car needs after inspecting the blockage.

How Long Does It Take to Unblock a DPF?

A forced regeneration or professional DPF clean can take anywhere from 30 minutes to more than two hours, depending on the garage's process and how blocked the filter is, so it's normally a same-day job.

Replace the DPF

This is the worst case scenario: you only need a new filter if the DPF is cracked, melted or too full of ash to clean. The garage then resets the soot values in the engine's control unit (ECU).

A good garage will try the cheaper fixes first and only recommend a replacement if the filter can’t be saved.

Is It Legal to Remove a Blocked DPF?

No. Under Regulation 61A(3) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, it's an offence to use a vehicle modified so it no longer meets the emissions standard it was built to.

DVSA and DfT guidance says removing a DPF "will almost invariably" break this rule, with fines of up to £1,000 for a car or £2,500 for a light goods vehicle. Removing a DPF can also invalidate your insurance, but repairing, cleaning or replacing a faulty DPF is perfectly legal.

How to Stop Your DPF Blocking Again

  • Give the car a longer run on a faster road every week or two.

  • Let regenerations finish by driving on for a few minutes if the fans are running when you arrive.

  • Use the low-SAPS oil your handbook specifies.

  • Keep the tank above a quarter full.

  • Fix EGR, injector and sensor faults promptly.

  • Keep up with regular servicing so the air filter, injectors and oil stay in good shape.

Frequently asked questions

Usually because the cause hasn't been fixed, such as short trips, the wrong oil or an EGR, injector or sensor fault, so ask your garage to check.
Yes. As well as the dedicated DPF warning light, a fault with the DPF system or its pressure sensor can turn on the engine management light on some cars, and a diesel with the engine management light on will fail its MOT.
Garages marked as BMG Verified have been physically visited by our team and meet our clear service level agreement standards for ratings and reliability.
Additives and DPF cleaner sprays won't unblock a heavily blocked DPF, so don't rely on one once you've lost power.
